A Website Visit to the Rohnert Park-Cotati Public Library Mural

Painted in a dome above the children’s room in the Rohnert Park-Cotati Public Library, this mural depicts lively characters from children’s literature as well as images of children enjoying books and reading.  Detailed images from the mural appear on the Mural Images webpage. The Mural Slideshow gives a tour of all the mural scenes. The Mural Drawings webpage contains samples of some of the hundreds of drawings done to prepare for the final mural.

The Mural Illustrations

The mural includes characters from some of the artist’s favorite childhood stories:  Jack and the Beanstalk, Aladdin and the Magic Lamp, The Emperor and the Nightingale, John Henry, Humpty Dumpty, Hey-Diddle-Diddle, Mother Goose, and The Frog Prince.

The Mural Story

Artists were invited to submit proposals for a mural to be painted in a dome above the children’s room in the new Rohnert Park-Cotati Public Library.  A committee composed of City Council members, Noll and Tam Architects, and Arts Council members reviewed all the proposals and selected Robert Eisenberg for the commission.  Working closely with Library staff and City representatives, Robert developed drawings, sketches and models over a two-year period to prepare for work on the final mural.  The actual painting took about four months to execute, and was completed a few months before the opening of the new library.
